Drifters Fish & I created our dream workshop, and we are so excited to announce it!

SALT & SMOKE: A Food Photography Workshop Celebrating the Pacific Northwest Harvest. With very special guests Ashley Rodriguez and Demetria Provatas!

Join us for a cozy, rustic, adventurous photography workshop on tiny Guemes in the gorgeous San Juan Islands in Washington state. Featuring a beautiful, seasonal menu with amazing food sourced almost entirely from the Pacific Northwest, lovingly prepared by Chef Kimi Reid!

We’ll deep-dive into visual storytelling through the lens of food. You’ll learn how to create a narrative around food and place by spending time with the people who make the food, and then learn how to capture that food, from raw ingredients to finished dishes. We’ll talk about color, composition, and lighting. We’ll also chat about portraiture, bringing images to life with people, and capturing motion. And we’ll be feasting all weekend!

Dig into fall magic // visual storytelling // food photography // cooking over fire // foraging for fall fruits // rustic pies // cozy times // tea // bonfires // beach feasts // cabins // and some hands-on technical skills to pull it all together ;)

// FRIDAY

2 pm: Gather & Meet the group. Welcome huddle. Fruit foraging and harvesting. Bring your cameras!

4 pm: Oyster Happy Hour!

6 pm: Welcome Feast! Salt-baked salmon, crab, oysters, fresh crusty bread. Sit down with the farmers, fishers and bread bakers whose amazing food will be featured throughout the weekend at this special welcome dinner!

// SATURDAY 

9 am: Breakfast: Sweet or savory porridge with sautéed apples and pears. Coffee + tea. Thick slabs of toast.

9:30 am: Morning Photo Workshop with Drifters Fish: Storytelling, color, composition, and place. Kimberley’s passion is visual storytelling: telling the stories of people and places through the lens of food. She has collaborated with Drifters Fish many times over the years, in both Alaska and Washington. We are so excited to deep dive into bringing stories to life with photography!

12:30 pm Lunch: Creamy roasted carrot soup.

1:30 pm: Cooking Over Fire with Ashley Rodriguez of Not Without Salt! Fire-cooking demo followed by photography session.

6 pm: Salt & Smoke Beach Dinner!  We’ll enjoy a fall feast of amazing seafood & harvest bounty cooked over fire, fire-roasted apples. Featuring some of Ashley’s amazing recipes from her new video series, Kitchen Unnecessary!

// SUNDAY 

9 am: Breakfast

9:30 am: Seasonal Pies with Demetria Provatas. Watch, capture, and learn about Demetria’s gorgeous hand-cut pies. Rustic harvest pie demo followed by photography session.

12:30 pm: Lunch (and pie!)

1:00 pm Editing Workflow; Closing Session with Q&A + Reflection; Tea & Cookies. Farewell.

Included: All workshops, excursions, and meals outlined above, from Friday, October 12th at 2 PM until Sunday, October 14th at 2 PM.

 

Not included: Transportation to the island, lodging. We have a list of fantastic resources to help you out with both of these details. There are some fantastic Airbnbs and a lovely, rustic resort on the island.

Tickets are non-refundable, but can be transferred up to two weeks before the workshop!

  • Peter B Stafford - Kimberly, when I was a senior in high school my parents took me to Anacortes to visit relatives and a place my father had fond memories of. We were treated to salmon cooked on wood planks next to an outdoor fire — fantastic! Loved the pictures of the area. BTW, that trip was in 1959.ReplyCancel
