About

Kimberley Hasselbrink

Hi! I’m Kimberley. I’m a freelance photographer based in San Francisco and Portland, OR. If you would like to discuss photography projects, I’d be thrilled to hear from you! Please email me at hello@theyearinfood.com.

There are many things I love in life: hiking tall, forested mountains, getting lost in the woods, long drives on empty roads with old country music, dramatic weather, chasing light, foggy days, huge messy meals with a bunch of my favorite people, and telling stories around food. I started a creative food site in 2007, called 52 Dinners, as a way to give voice to some of those favorite things. Over time that morphed into a more familiar recipe journal, The Year in Food.

The idea behind this site is to use food as a lens to chart the course of the year through creative cooking and eating with an emphasis on seasonal fruits and vegetables. And while it is about what’s in season, it’s also about the moments and the meals that mark those seasons. So it’s also about the people that bring us that food. And it’s about photography. And a little bit of travel. And the things that inspire me.

Last year, I released my first cookbook, Vibrant Food. Vibrant Food was inspired by a series that I started here, called Color Studies, which focused on the many mesmerizing colors of produce. The book is about being inspired by color, and using color and creativity to create gorgeous, dynamic dishes. Vibrant Food has received praise from Food and Wine, San Francisco Chronicle, Saveur, The Chicago Tribune, and more.

Please note that I do not review products, websites, etc. Books are considered on a case by case basis, especially if you’re someone whose work I love and admire!

  • Pang - I got the book yesterday, and I was immediately in love with your recipes and your gorgeous photographs. I can’t decide which recipe to start; I want to make all of them!!!!ReplyCancel

  • Emily - My husband pre-ordered the cookbook for me as an anniversary gift- that’s how much I love your recipes. The photography is stunning, and somehow the food manages to be even better than it looks! In fact, I’ve had so much fun cooking since I got your book a few months ago, that I’ve decided to try my hand at some original recipes and food blogging too. Thanks for your inspiration!ReplyCancel

  • Kat - Hi Kimberley!
I came across your blog from http://www.dollyandoatmeal.com – I love how intrigued you are with the incredible beauty of produce – each time I go to Union Square green market here in NYC I can’t believe my eyes – pure beauty! Can’t wait to look at more of your pictures – keep up your amazing work!ReplyCancel

  • Molly - Hey my name is Molly and I am a cook at Chez Panisse looking to extend my work into a more personal and creative realm. I am in the throws of starting my own site and have never made a website before. I love the look of your site and it seems easy to use. I was just wondering what platform you used to build your site. I have been looking at squarespace and wordpress. Don’t want to spend a ton of money (since I don’t have a ton!) and its a new project. But I also want it to look good and be easy to develop for someone who has very little web experience.
If you have any tips I would love to hear them! ThanksReplyCancel

  • sharon - love this!ReplyCancel

  • Erin Oates - Hi Kimberley –

First off, what a gorgeous, inspiring site and what fabulous information. Love it.

And I have a suggestion…I find the light color of your type hard to read. I don’t think it’s because I’m a 50-something either, I think that it needs to go to a more saturated color shade. I love the grey, rich and different. I’ve seen sites use dark grey – rather that a lighter shade like this one – and it’s easy to read. Almost a dark grey that edges on black but is still distinctively grey!

Hope you’ll consider doing this – because I love your site but it’s tough on my eyes to read such a light type!

    Thanks

  • Kristie - Hi Kimberley,

Thank you for reading my email.
My name is Kristie Liu and I am a marketing graduate student in New York University. My team and I are currently working on a project for my CapStone class, which is to create an Mobile App that is related to Healthy/Lite recipes and food. The App that we are considering to develop will be called LiteChef, and the idea is to create a social environment in encouraging users to explore cooking in lite and healthy ways without compromising the taste. With the enormous diet-related market in U.S. and the unique selling point of making food healthy while maintaining its taste, we have faith in our app and really want to create it for everyone to utilize. As a big fan of your blog, your choice of methods and healthy ingredients to make your dishes really impressd me and fits the idea of our app . We want to see if you are interested in joining us by share your stories and recipes on this app once the app is finished. You are such an inspirational and influential person and I hope to share our passion for healthy food together with the world!

Again, thank you for taking time in reading this email. I really hope that I can have a few minutes of your time to discuss further about LiteChef.

    Yours sincerely,

    KristieReplyCancel

  • George Wilson - Hello Webmaster,
I would like to draw your kind attention towards the low ranking of your targeted keywords and low visitor towards the website. While going through the website on Google I found that there are a number of the keywords which are not available in the 1st/2nd page. This is the only reason why people are unable to find you while searching for services as a result of which you are losing the traffic.
Looking into the matter at this point can be a turning point for you and your business website.Hence, I would like to discuss the way through which we both could find out a solution to come up with those keywords over the Google SERP.
If you are interested in our proposal, we will let you know about the Price and Time Frame along with the Plan of action and get the work done as per your expectations.
Looking forward for your response regarding the services you need.ReplyCancel
