Cookbook Swap and Homage to Gourmet

Book Swap at 18 Reasons

This week I began volunteering with 18 Reasons, a first-of-its-kind community center dedicated to food and food culture. Really, there is no better fit for me and volunteerism than this place.

And what a lovely way to begin. The tiny space hosted a cookbook swap that was impressively flush with books that would make any food-lover swoon. I spent most of the evening behind a counter serving wine, internally giddy like I had a new crush, warmed by conversations with good people, trying not to grow attached to books that would be gone before the evening was over. (Although I did luck out with two beautiful books at the night’s end.)

The event was co-hosted by Omnivore Books, an equally heartwarming establishment. Owner Celia Sack brought a little red notebook in which guests expressed condolences over the folding of Gourmet, sent directly to Ms. Reichl. Speaking of, Reichl’s interview with Terry Gross makes me love the woman even more. Go listen.
